Beautiful Day

Since I haven't posted anything for awhile I was forced to start a new blog. Mainly because I forgot all of my information and how to access it! So this is the starting of my new blog that hopefully i will update more often.

Since I have last posted quite a bit has changed. I picked up my intensity with running and with that came a whole slough of problems. The main problem is my weight. Even though I'm still in pretty good shape and continue to run, I'm finding that my body is paying the price. Running four miles a day doesn't feel like it used to. I used to be very light on my feet. I could run at a heavy pace with virtually no problems and my shoes seemed to last longer than 3 months.

Now I'm finding that cardiovascular wise, I'm still in great shape but my legs, feet, and ankles are taking a beating. I can still make it through the my four mile loop but when I get done I feel the need to go home and Ice things down. Which usually I don't do that and the next time I get ready for a run I'm pretty sore.

You may think this is sad but I don't. I remember the days when I couldn't wait to get out and run. I remember even if the weather was shitty I would make sure I got out and I would actually enjoy it. Sometimes more than when the weather was nice.

What is the point of my rambling on? Well I have decided that if I want to be back where I was that I should get my ass in shape. As I have said before running isn't the issue. Lack of motivation isn't the issue. The weight is the issue. Brace yourself.....this is going to be a long post.

Two weeks ago I made a decision. I decided that it is time for the weight to come off. This time it will work. There is no giving up. There will be rough patches I'm sure. But quitting isn't an option. Now you might be thinking what kind of diet did I chose? As with any diet there are pro's and con's. I see people every day that start diets and they fail. Most of the time these people fail because of a lack of information, and a lack of motivation. How am I different from those people? Why am I special?

The answer is that I'm not. However I do have the information, and the motivation. Just because I'm fat right now doesn't mean that I don't know about nutrition. A few years ago (back when I was lean) I actually went to school to be a Personal Trainer. I did graduate and along the way I learned many things that I never new before. One of them was about nutrition and the many different diets out there. I admit I let the stresses of my life get to me and food was a way out. It was a comfort thing for me.

Well the diet that I chose was the Keto diet. Keto diets generally get a bad rap. However one of the things that I learned while in school is that these diets are safe and effective. Just as any other diet, to see results you have to stick to it. A keto diet is very similar to a Low Carb diet. The main difference is that with the Keto diet you have very little to no carbs and those carbs come from vegetables. With the Low carb approach (Atkins) you have no carbs through the induction phase and then you are allowed to have a small amount of carbs. I'm not sure of the actual number but I believe it's up to 100g a day. The other difference with the keto diet vs. low carb approach is that you eat a low amount of fat and carbs vs. the Atkins approach where you eat a high amount of fat.

With the Keto diet the idea is to keep your body in Ketosis. Ketosis is when your body switches from using carbohydrates as it's main source of fuel and instead turns to fat as fuel. The liver breaks down the fat in our bodies and turns them into what is called Ketones. The ketones are then used as energy. Excess ketones are then excreted in the urine. So thinking about it you are actually peeing out extra fat that's not needed. It's kind of cool if you think about it. The other thing that I like about the keto diet is that as I said above it is also low fat. This is good because if you take in a large amounts of fat your body will first use that before it uses the bodies own fat stores. If you take in very little fat, the body will be forced to use it's own stores. That is why this approach in my opinion is more effective than the atkins plan.

Your body is a fat burning furnace. The other really positive thing about this diet is that while in ketosis your body has a constant supply of energy. So you will virtually have no cravings or hunger pains. While dieting that is a huge thing.

I'm done rambling for now but I will keep you posted on my progress. Thanks for listening!
